‘Filth’ is a written text and performance-lecture I co-authored with designer Arthur Gouillart in 2023, as a geopoetic meditation on the metaphysics of decay and regeneration. Both draw upon the thought of German pessimists Arthur Schopenhauer and Philipp Mainländer, and are structured according to the six stages of bodily decomposition. Excerpt below.

The text is published in Becoming Geological (2022) an anthology edited by Martin Howse to accompany the eponymous exhibition. It’s nestled in a section titled ‘Becoming earth’, alongside the work of philosophers Thomas Moynihan and Patricia McCormack. Available here.

The performance-lecture took place in person and online on 5 January 2023 at V2_ in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Drawing together resources and imagery compiled for the written text, the performance-lecture at once lends voice to the protagonist of ‘Filth’ while visually mapping the research process undertaken.
